One of our writers had the chance to attend the PGA Tour Champions tournament just north of Seattle last weekend. He loves going to watch the old guys play for a couple reasons: one, the crowds are a lot smaller than regular tour events, and two, the seniors swing the club a lot more like you and I than the Rorys, JTs, and Brysons of the world.
Before the first round, he watched Rocco Mediate warm up the driving range. He was mesmerized by Rocco hitting an oversize looking iron that had some sort of contraption that slid up and down the shaft as he swung. Evidently, Rocco was flushing it.
Upon doing a little digging of my own, I found out the training aid was one that Rocco actively endorses. It’s called the Performance Golf Straight Stick.
Even though it’s simple to use, this training aid addresses some of the most important issues amateurs face in their golf swing. In fact, it can have them hitting solid, straight golf shots in just a matter of minutes.
Keep reading as we’re going to take a closer look at what the Straight Stick’s all about.
Unlike a lot of training aids, you can hit balls with the Straight Stick.
Adjustable AccuGrip puts your hands on the club perfectly every time.
Compression Clicker slides up and down the club shaft and clicks at impact letting you know when your swing is on-plane.
As I mentioned in the opening, the Straight Stick is pretty simple in terms of its design features and tech. But that’s part of what makes it so great, it’s easy to use and gets results!
With that said, we need to discuss how it works and the key features that make it so great. . .
If you ask any top teacher or accomplished player, they’ll tell you the grip is the most important fundamental in the golf swing. After all, your hands are your only connection to the golf club. So, making sure they’re positioned correctly is critical.
The Straight Stick comes with an adjustable AccuGrip that guarantees your grip will be in the proper position every time.
Not all grips are the same though. That’s why the AccuGrip can be adjusted for neutral, strong, and strong plus positions.
Once you have your hands on the club correctly, the Straight Stick really shows its magic. This is where its proprietary Compression Clicker comes into play.
This magnetic component is designed to slide up and down the shaft as you swing the club on plane. If you can get the Compression Clicker to “click” against the farel at the exact time you make contact with the ball, you’ll know that you have the club on plane and in the slot. When you time it right, your contact will be flush, and the ball will fly high and straight at the target.
You can even position the Compression Clicker on the shaft in a spot that corresponds to your swing speed. The markings are located just below the grip.
Spending even just a few minutes with the Straight Stick every week will improve your clubface control, help you create dynamic loft, increase lag, and deliver the club square to the ball at impact. s, and SmartGRIP handles which make transport easy.
PROS
CONS
I’ve tried just about every training aid out there over the years, and honestly, most of them aren’t really that great. But our writer and I both agree that the Straight Stick is the exception rather than the rule in this regard.
It’s incredibly easy to use and solves a whole host of problems that golfers deal with in their swing.
The Straight Stick has the full Golfer’s Authority endorsement.
