Since the onset of COVID-19, golf has witnessed an explosion of new people taking an interest in the game. The truth is most folks are brand new to it. Maybe they’ve been to the driving range a time or two, or played a little when they were younger, but for all intents and purposes, they’re just starting out.
As such, equipment manufacturers have recognized the need for equipment geared toward these types of golfers. Especially when it comes to irons.
TaylorMade is one of the industry leaders in this regard, and Stealth irons are their latest introduction in the game improvement category. These irons are packed with technology and early reports are that they’re some of the most forgiving TaylorMade has ever produced.
Let’s dig deeper.
Key Features
Large sole and thinner top line inspire confidence at address.
Inverted Cone Technology stretches the sweet spot farther toward the toe, where most amateurs miss.
Cap Back Technology diverges from traditional cavity back design to offer increased distance and forgiveness.
Design and Technology
The most immediate feature of the Stealth irons is Cap Back Technology. In layman’s terms, this means that the body of the head is hollow.
Along with the Thru-Slot in the sole, this technology effectively disconnects the face from the body of the iron. Since there’s nothing behind the face, maximum flex and rebound make energy transfer between the face and the ball incredibly efficient. All this amounts to faster ball speeds and more distance.
TaylorMade has incorporated Inverted Cone Technology in it’s irons going back a few years. It’s utilized in the Stealth irons too. This tried and true tech is proven to help golfers maintain consistent ball speed across the entire face. Yes, that includes mishits too.
There’s a lot of weight high in the toe of most cavity back irons. This is far from optimal. TaylorMade has redistributed this weight by wrapping the Cap Back around the entire toe. This removes some 10 grams of needless weight and allows golfers to achieve greater clubhead speed.
The weight that’s removed from the toe has been redistributed to the sole which is wider and lacks any relief on the trailing edge. Not only does this improve turf interaction, it provides more forgiveness on thin shots.
Suffice it to say the Stealth irons stand to revolutionize how we’re going to think about game improvement irons in the future.
TaylorMade Stealth Irons
The Taylormade Golf Stealth Iron Set is a game-changing addition to any golfer’s arsenal. Designed for mid to high handicappers, this set offers game improvement irons with a high launching and forgiving design.
The standout feature of the Taylormade Golf Stealth Iron Set is its low center of gravity. This design element contributes to a high launching trajectory, making it easier for you to hit the ball and achieve a more consistent flight. Say goodbye to those frustrating shots that fall short or veer off course. With these irons, you’ll experience a level of forgiveness and playability like never before.
PROS
- Lack of weight in the toe extends the sweet spot and offers more forgiveness than other game improvement irons.
- Inverted Cone Technology increases MOI across the face for forgiveness and consistent ball speeds, even on mishits.
- Wider sole provides more forgiveness on thin shots and improves turf interaction in all playing conditions.
CONS
- Price point is quite high.
- May not be suitable for better players looking for playability and ability to hit different shots.
- Availability may be limited because irons are in such high demand.
Our Experience
Whenever TaylorMade comes out with something new (which is more often than most manufacturers), I can’t wait to get my hands on it. So, when the Stealth irons were introduced, I could hardly wait to get to the range. For the last few years, I’ve personally gone away from the thick top lined, bulky look of cavity back irons. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, it’s just not my preference.
The Stealth irons are quite different from the traditional cavity back look, however. While the sole is wide, the top line isn’t as thick as previous generations. The club’s profile behind the ball gives you the sense that you’re going to hit it solid. The club is remarkably forgiving too. I noticed forgiveness toward the toe, which is what TaylorMade was after.
While the company is known for its hot irons, these irons weren’t quite as hot as I expected. Don’t get me wrong, they were plenty long, but didn’t seem as hot as other TaylorMade irons I’ve hit. Overall, I think TaylorMade is really on to something with Cup Back Technology and hollow club heads. The science behind it makes sense and it seems to deliver on the course.
