PXG Hellcat ZT Putter Review

This is the new PXG Hellcat ZT Putter, and I don't say this very often, but this is a genius product. PXG may have potentially done the impossible. They have made a zero-torque, perfectly balanced putter that looks like a traditional-style blade putter, all for under $249. It's crazy what PXG may have just pulled off for that price. The question is, does it work?

Last year, PXG released its first zero torque putter, named after PXG Founder and CEO Bob Parsons' late brother Allan. Which is one of the most accurate putters I have ever used.

This was followed by the Bat Attack ZT, which was released a few months ago. In case you were wondering, that ZT stands for "zero torque" - basically, a fancy way to say that the face stays square without you having to baby it through your stroke.

PXG dropped the Hellcat ZT today, and it's the newest addition to their Zero Torque putter family. They've now got all the bases covered with three head styles - you can pick from a mallet, mid-mallet, or this new blade design. What's great is that you're not limited to choosing between the look you want and the performance you need. Whether you're drawn to a classic blade or prefer something beefier, you'll still get that same Zero Torque Balance Technology that keeps your putts tracking straight and true.

So, how does this Zero Torque work? Now the magic happens with PXG’s patented S-hosel design. They've positioned the shaft so it sits just above the putter's center of gravity, which creates this specific toe-up balance that keeps everything stable. Bottom line? The putter fights off any twisting while you're making your stroke, so you don't have to work as hard to keep it square.

The biggest change with the Hellcat compared to the Allen and Bat Attack? It's a blade putter. While the Bat Attack stuck with a more traditional look and the Allen went totally unique with PXG building the entire putter around their tech, the Hellcat takes a different approach. They've packed all that zero torque technology into a classic blade shape - the kind you've probably putted with before.

That familiar look is huge. When you're standing over this thing, it'll feel like an old friend rather than some space-age experiment. And that's exactly why more golfers will give this zero torque tech a shot - it doesn't look intimidating or weird. You get all the benefits of the technology without having to adjust to something that looks completely foreign in your bag. But what really blows my mind is the price, and $249, it invites every golfer to make the switch to zero torque, without stressing about the price.

Now, there are some cool features you can't see from the outside, but they make a huge difference in how this putter feels and performs. Firstly, it's milled from 303 stainless steel, which features a clean, streamlined design that delivers elite performance without the need for adjustable weighting.

They’ve also built the Hellcat with 4 degrees of loft, but here's the cool part - it actually plays more like a 3-degree once you're set up. That's because PXG has engineered in 1 degree of forward press. The face features PXG’s signature Pyramid Face Pattern technology, which is a diamond-shaped pyramid pattern that's extremely thin. By removing weight from the front, you get a better feel and sound, even with that thin face. But those little pyramids aren't just for show either. They help grip the ball and get it rolling end-over-end faster. 

You know how putters have a few degrees of loft that can make the ball hop at first? This texture helps combat bounce and achieves the smooth roll you’ll see on the tour.

Which I think is maybe from those face pyramids. But once you dial in the speed, which takes like five minutes on the practice green, the zero torque effect is wild. Some putters claim this technology but don't deliver. This one? It literally feels like it's on autopilot. 

The best way I can describe it is that it feels like it just glides back and through like it's on invisible tracks. Don't overthink it, don't manipulate anything with your hands - just let it ride. Yeah, the feel and speed take some getting used to, but that's nothing compared to how stable this thing is. Even when you catch one toward the heel or toe, it still rolls pretty true.

Bottom line? The Hellcat Zero Torque could be a game-changer for your putting. It cleaned up my putting big time. More putts started on my target line, and once you get the speed dialed, your distance control gets way more consistent. 

Better feel for pace, better reads, more made putts - that's what we're all after, right? 

Absolutely, while the PXG Hellcat ZT Putter is a great product, there are a few pros and cons that you need to be aware of:

Pros:

• Enhanced Stability Through Zero Torque Technology: The S-hosel design positions the shaft axis above the center of gravity, minimizing torque and helping the putter face stay square throughout the stroke. This reduces the need for constant face manipulation, allowing for a more natural, reliable swing.
  
  

• Soft, Responsive Feel and Forgiving Ball Roll: Precision-engineered from MIM 303 stainless steel and featuring PXG’s proprietary Pyramid Face Pattern, the club delivers a soft, muted feel at impact and promotes consistent roll, even on off-center strikes.
  
  

• Balanced Construction and Traditional Looks: The putter combines a classic blade appearance with modern engineering, appealing to players who prefer traditional aesthetics but still want advanced performance. The built-in 1° forward press also encourages a consistent hand position at address, aiding alignment and stroke consistency.

Cons: 

• Heavy Branding and Distinctive Hosel: The prominent PXG branding and unique S-hosel may not suit players who prefer minimalist styles or are sensitive to visual distraction behind the ball.
  
  

• Firm, Rectangular Grip May Not Suit Everyone: The stock grip is notably square and firm, which can feel uncomfortable for players accustomed to softer, rounder grips. Getting used to it or replacing it may be necessary for optimal comfort.
  
  

• Premium Price Relative to Traditional Blade Putters: While competitively priced for a zero-torque model, the Hellcat ZT is still more expensive than many classic blade putters, which could be a drawback for budget-conscious golfers.

If you're thinking about a new putter, put this one on your short list. The technology actually works, the traditional blade shape won't freak you out, and the performance backs up the $249 price tag. Which is just insane to me
