I love Rickie Fowler. Even though he hasn’t played much remarkable golf in the last couple seasons, he’s still a fan favorite. On any given Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you can find throngs of folks dressed in orange with flat-bill hats (young kids especially) following the guy around. It doesn’t matter if he’s 16 under or 8 over.

The TaylorMade golf ball he employs has just as much flare and pizazz as he does. The TP5 Pix and TP5X Pix are both covered in what look like Halloween candy corns.

The colors – orange, black, and white – are inspired by his alma mater and college golf powerhouse, Oklahoma State University.

Just like Ricky and his days in Stillwater, the TaylorMade Golf Ball Department has come a long way in the last few years.

I’m curious to have a closer look. I bet you are too.

Key Features

ClearPath Alignment feature makes lining up putts and tee shots easy.

Tour Flight Dimple Pattern is strategically designed to optimize both carry distance off the tee and descent angle on approach shots.

Soft urethane cover interacts with the grooves on short clubs to maximize spin and control where it matters most.

Design and Technology

Both the TP5 Pix and TP5X Pix are loaded with cool design features.

So more about that which I promised you in the previous section. . . Rickie Fowler’s design has been around for a while and chances are you’ve found one of these balls out on the course, even if you haven’t played one yourself.

New to the lineup are a Matthew Wolf-inspired ball with a black and white wolf, an Oklahoma State Pistol Pete full-figure, and a ball just with his mustache.

If Oklahoma State isn’t your school of choice, don’t worry. TaylorMade now makes this ball with the logos of most major Division I schools.

PROS

  • Design features appeal to wide array of golfers.

  • Two variations on the same ball let golfers choose the one that’s best for their game.

CONS

  • Price point is higher than other premium balls.
  • Graphics may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
  • Ball is not as durable as other, cheaper options.

Our Experience

I’ve played both the TP5 Pix and TP5X Pix balls myself. Am I good enough to play them? On my best days, maybe.

What I can tell you is that there are some good sticks in the Phoenix area (and everywhere else) that swear by these balls. They’re all better players that tout these balls’ performance on every level.

Are their cover graphics cool? No doubt. But it’s really about performance for better players at the end of the day.

Even though this ball might not be the best one for my game, there’s no denying the benefits it delivers.

Conclusion

No one is surprised that TaylorMade continues to dominate the golf equipment market. They just get it. They’re trendy, not afraid to stand out from the crowd, and have one hell of a marketing team.

With all that being said, the TP5 Pix and TP5X Pix balls are Tour-inspired and trusted by elite players for reason. They flat out perform.

If you’re a weekend warrior that has good days and bad like most of us in the Golfer’s Authority community, I don’t blame you for buying these balls because you’re a fan. I’ve done the same thing.

However, if you’re a single-digit handicap and are looking for more out of the golf ball you play, give the TaylorMade TP5 Pix or TP5X Pix a try. We think you’ll be impressed by a whole lot more than the pretty design.
